Jacob shifted on the leather sofa in the waiting room of his fatherâs office, flipping through some star-filled magazine. Heâd planned on stopping by first thing, but heâd had a shit ton of paperwork to deal with and a few interviews.
The case had to come first.
Though, Katie had been hounding him about her idea to let Hannah interview her. More importantly, her desire to, all of a sudden, get together with her uncle and his father.
Something Jacob desperately didnât think she should do alone.
He tapped his foot on the floor. Sometimes, it peeved him that his dad could keep him waiting. Especially knowing how important this was. And second, that it was still business hours and Jacob was on the clock.
His fatherâs law practice took up two floors and had been decorated by his motherâs delicate hand and impeccable tastes. His parents had always been into the finer things. If it wasnât top quality, what was the point? Jacob would try to argue that sometimes practicality trumped quality, and the only time his father agreed was with cars. But still, his dad drove a Lexus, a vehicle of status.
Jacob understood why his mother did it. She poured her emotions into things instead of her one living son. But he wasnât sure why his father did. Perhaps it was just to keep the peace with his mom.
âJacob,â Ms. Beatle said. âYour father is free now.â
âThanks.â He smiled, stood, and made his way across the waiting area. He eyed the funky container sitting on the corner of her desk, just like he had over twenty years ago.
âGo ahead,â she said. âI still carry your favorite.â
Quickly, he reached his hand across the desk, opened the lid, and scooped out a handful of miniature chocolates. âHow come you never put anything else in the jar?â
âIâm always hoping youâll come to visit your father.â She stood to escort him down the long twisty halls of Donovan, Hillard, and Tate.
âNot necessary. I donât get lost here anymore.â
âAll right,â she said. âEnjoy your visit.â
Jacob chewed on a piece of chocolate while stuffing a few more into his coat pocket. When he was a kid, the idea was to finish the candy before he found his way to his fatherâs office. Pretty much the only reason he used to get lost. Of course, he was eating at least three pieces at a time back then.
He bumped into a few lawyers heâd seen in court, and a few others who had known him when he was in diapersâthey enjoyed letting him know that. He had spent a lot of time in this office. His fondest memories were when Katie joined him. Theyâd always get into some good debates regarding criminal law and which side of the fence was better. He and Katie had always gone for putting the criminals away, while his dad and partners would cross-examine them with the finer points of how the system really worked.
Jacob tapped on his fatherâs half-open office door.
âCome on in.â His father was behind his big maple desk, seated in his tufted leather chair.
